Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Thursday 13th April 2023-. Everything is ready for next weekend, from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd April, the tenth edition of the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair will showcase the excellence of our local produce and the island’s gastronomy.

Promoted and financed by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and organised by Infecar, this fair will once again be the benchmark event in Gran Canaria for both the primary and gastronomic sectors.

On Thursday, 13 April, a press conference was held to present the event, with the participation of the President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales; the Councillor for the Primary Sector and Food Sovereignty, Miguel Hidalgo; the Councillor for Industry, Trade and Crafts, Minerva Alonso; the Technical Coordinator for Economic Development, Energy Sovereignty, Climate and Knowledge, Raúl García; and the General Manager of Infecar, Natalia Santana.

“Gran Canaria Me Gusta makes the daily work of local producers visible; it is committed to the products of the country, and highlights the value of the territory and the origin of the products,” said Antonio Morales during the presentation of this event.

The president also stressed that “Food can not only increase the value of a destination, but also increase its own intrinsic value: the identity of Gran Canaria is also expressed through the land, the sea and gastronomy”.

The tenth edition of the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair will open its doors on Friday 21 April, with almost 60 exhibitors who will have their wares on display for direct purchase by visitors.

Thus, visitors will be able to enjoy a large exhibition space for the sale of local produce in the upper Hall 7; in the lower Hall 7, the Primary Sector and Food Sovereignty and Island Slaughterhouses activities; in Hall 6, more exhibition space and this year’s children’s workshops; in Hall 5, more exhibition space, the gastronomic exhibitions and regional cooking competitions and, in the Canary Islands Hall, the Canary Islands Regional Sommelier Competition and the Origins Professional Day, on Monday 24th.

Gastronomic exhibitions

This event will once again bring together at Infecar renowned chefs from the national and local scene to showcase the gastronomic sector of our country, with the raw materials of our land as the protagonist.

The Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair will feature Carito Lourenço (Restaurante Fierro, one MICHELIN Star and one Repsol Sun); Juanjo López (La Tasquita de Enfrente, recommended by the MICHELIN Guide and two Repsol Suns); Marta Verona, winner of the sixth edition of Masterchef Spain; and Tomeu Arbona and María José Orero, founders of Fornet de la Soca. In addition, on this occasion Carmelo Florido (Restaurante El Equilibrista 33, BIB Gourmand from the MICHELIN Guide and two Repsol Suns) will be the host chef for this edition, having won the 2022 Award for Excellence in Commitment to Local Product Qué Bueno Gran Canaria Me Gusta.

Also local, the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair will be delighted with the culinary skills of Miguel and Alberto Herrera, from Restaurante Camino al Jamonal; Adrián García and Kilian Nordelo, from La Catedral Bistró; and Dana Joher, master pastry chef at Ave Pastelería Artesana.

In addition to all this, there will be live demonstrations by Fagor Professional and SPAR Gran Canaria; and the finals of the Regional Cooking Competitions in the New Talents and Professional categories.

Children’s workshops

On this occasion, Aurora Ruiz, winner of the eighth edition of Masterchef Junior, will be the guest chef at the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair. Aurora, accompanied by Alejandro de la Nuez, executive chef of the Santa Mónica Suites, will guide the children through the preparation of the recipes, made up of different products from the island.

With this activity, organised by the Chamber of Commerce of Gran Canaria, the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair aims to show the importance of supporting the local produce of the island and, through a didactic, dynamic and interactive cooking workshop, to teach and train the senses of children through the visual, olfactory and gustatory recognition of different typical products of the island, as well as their identification with the geographical area that produces them.

Those interested in attending these children’s cooking workshops with their children must have previously purchased their ticket in order to register, free of charge, at the following link: https://feriagrancanariamegusta.es/talleres-infantiles/

SPAR Gran Canaria, sponsor of the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair for the last eight editions, will also be holding four sessions of the Fruit Art Workshop on Friday 21st April.

Primary Sector Activities

The Product Classroom and the Knowledge Classroom, where visitors can taste and learn about the tastes and sensations of our land, will once again be two of the main attractions of the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair. During the fair, participants will have the opportunity to discover aspects linked to the product, its production and preparation, highlighting its identity and emphasising its importance for the island.

The Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair will also have the Aula El Sereto, a space for the communication of ideas, ancestral and unique knowledge, experiences and ways of doing things, transmission of knowledge and proposals for action, development of utilities and techniques in an express and intense format.

To learn the secrets of an exceptional meat, visitors will have at their disposal the space Mataderos Insulares, Carnes de Gran Canaria, where they will be able to taste and enjoy the interpretation of this meat by newcomers, cooks from training centres, and give space and voice to the interpretation, with the participation of the young promises of the island’s gastronomy.

The Primary Sector activities at the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair are completed with the Much more than fishing classroom, where the fishing sector of Gran Canaria and its products will be showcased. This year the emphasis will be on the great nutritional values of the less commercially valuable species, as well as their preparation and ways of preserving them.

In addition to all of the above, the Primary Sector will also have a special area for groups and key players in the primary sector, to bring them closer to island society and publicise their work, as well as an area to bring knowledge and traditions closer to the youngest members of the family.

16th Gran Canaria 2022 Official Honey Competition Awards Ceremony

On Friday 21 April, at 18.00 hours, the Department of the Primary Sector and Food Sovereignty will hold the prize-giving ceremony for the 17th Gran Canaria 2022 Official Honey Competition. This event will once again help to raise the profile of a minority sector of livestock farming, but one that is no less important for that reason.

Origins Gastronomy Congress

The final climax to the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair will take place on Monday 24 April with the 6th Origins Gastronomy Congress, aimed at the gastronomy sector: chefs, restaurateurs, waiters, sommeliers, the primary sector, etc. and organised by the Regional Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

Each year, this congress aims to promote the region, its local products and the people who make the wonderful gastronomy of Gran Canaria possible, with a different focus.

On this occasion, with the focus on the richness of our identity, the aim is to show the Asian influence on our culture, for which the local restaurants Tabaiba (one MICHELIN Star and one Sol Repsol, by Abraham Ortega and Aser Martin) and Borneo (Cristina Monge), on the one hand, and El Bento (Teresa Moon) and 222 S W (Mikel González), on the other, will demonstrate their influence on the island’s cuisine.

The association of Barmans of Gran Canaria will prepare a series of liquid recipes with our wonderful local product, reflecting the new trends in cocktails, at the hands of the bartender Antonio García.
