Canarian Traditional music Canarian star the concert Canariona with the which the Cabildo celebrate Canary Islands Day

  • The event will be held next Sunday, 29 May, in Santa Catalina Park in the capital of Gran Canaria, starting at 7.30 p.m. and will be free of charge.
  • Antonio Morales assures that, “in the era of globalisation, unique cultures must be disseminated, protected and promoted, and play an essential role in the model of sustainable development”.

The concert of Canarian groups ‘Canariona’, which mixes the most traditional music linked to folklore with the most modern and innovative proposals, will be the event with which the Cabildo of Gran Canaria will celebrate this year’s Canary Islands Day, as stated by the president of the island corporation, Antonio Morales, who described the festival as “a great festival to celebrate what makes us unique and singular: our culture, our identity as a people”.

“In the age of globalisation, unique cultures must be disseminated, protected and promoted. They must also play a fundamental role in the new model of sustainable development. That is why we believe that the best way to celebrate our day is with a great cultural event that is free and open to all citizens”, Morales stressed at the presentation of the concert, which took place in the courtyard of the Cabildo, and in which he was accompanied by Juan Carlos Jiménez, a member of Los Gofiones, and Nathalie Noppe, singer of Foxy Mammals.

For the last five years, the Government of Gran Canaria has been commemorating the Day of the Canary Islands with the organisation of this concert featuring local artists which, in this edition, recovers the presence, after the time of the pandemic, in which it was necessary to adapt it to an ‘online’ format. In fact, in 2020, in the midst of the health crisis, the Island Corporation did it through a live ‘streaming’ and, already in 2021, it was a recording in different locations and which was transmitted through the Canary Islands Television and the social networks of the Cabildo itself.

“This year, we are very happy to return to the live format and to be able to enjoy the best live music,” said Antonio Morales, who announced that ‘Canariona’ will be held next Sunday, 29 May, in Santa Catalina Park in the capital of Gran Canaria, starting at 19.30 and will be free of charge.

The concert, organised by Infecar, will begin with a performance by Los Gofiones, a leading group in traditional music, followed by a section focusing on pop-rock music, with Birkins and Foxy Mammals. Then it will be the turn of urban music, with rappers Sara Socas and Erika Dos Santos, and Locoplaya will bring the show to a close. There will also be a space for humour, with performances by Delia Santana and Petite Lorena. It should be noted that a gastronomic area will be set up in the park, with food trolleys available to all those attending the concert.

In addition, as a novelty this year, “in the design of the poster, the Cabildo wanted to make a nod to the traditional dress of the ‘canarionas’, incorporating a stripe with lines inspired by the typical costume, along with the Roque Nublo, which is the natural and scenic emblem of our land”, concluded Morales.
For his part, Juan Carlos Jiménez expressed his gratitude for the invitation from the Island Institution and for allowing Los Gofiones to participate and open the concert, and he placed special value on “the contribution of all the Canary Island timple musicians, of different versions, who are going to participate and contribute their grain of sand to this festival”.

Nathalie Noppe stressed that this will be her first concert this year “and we are very happy to meet the public again, now that everything seems to be back to normal”. She announced that her band, Foxy Mammals, is immersed in the recording of their first album “and this is an excellent way to get in touch again with our music and share it”.
