The Qué Bueno Canarias Regional Restaurant Awards celebrate the gastronomy of the Canary Islands

  • Carmelo Florido, from El Equilibrista 33 (Gran Canaria), has been recognised as the Best Chef of the Canary Islands 2022, while the award for Best Restaurant of the Canary Islands 2022 went to Etéreo by Pedro Nel (Tenerife).
  • The ¡Qué Bueno! Gran Canaria Me Gusta for excellence with local produce went to La Trastienda de Chago (Gáldar). Muxgo (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) also received special recognition.

Chefs, sommeliers, headwaiters, critics… the gastronomic and restaurant excellence of the Canary Islands gathered this Monday at Infecar to celebrate the eleventh gala of the Regional Restaurant Awards Qué Bueno Canarias and the second edition of the Reconocimiento ¡Qué Bueno! Gran Canaria Me Gusta for excellence with local produce, two events framed on this occasion in the tenth edition of the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair, which this year will be held from 21st to 23rd April.

“Whether they are Repsol Suns, Michelin Stars or “Bib Gourmand”, more and more establishments on our island have received some of the most prestigious gastronomic awards and recognitions in Spain, and there is increasing interest in our cuisine and wines,” said Antonio Morales, adding that “this would not be possible without the perfect combination of the quality of our local products, the talent and entrepreneurial spirit of chefs and hoteliers and the firm commitment of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria to food sovereignty and the promotion of our cheeses, wines, fruit and vegetables”.

Morales also pointed out that “the Qué Bueno Canarias Regional Restaurant Awards and the ¡Qué Bueno! Gran Canaria Me Gusta for excellence with local produce are another step on the road to excellence and recognition of the good work that is being done”.

With all the colleagues of the profession as witnesses, the XI Regional Restaurant Awards Qué Bueno Canarias have awarded the professional year 2022, emphasising the enormous potential of the gastronomy and catering of the islands to take a prominent role in the national scene.

Thus, the award for Best Restaurant in the Canary Islands 2022 went to Etéreo by Pedro Nel, on the island of Tenerife, a meeting point between market cuisine and touches of cultural fusion. For his part, Carmelo Florido, from El Equilibrista 33 (Gran Canaria), has been designated Best Chef of the Canary Islands 2022, for his role as a moderniser of the gastronomic tradition of Gran Canaria.

In addition to this, Gran Canaria also won the awards for Best Grill 2022, which went to Casa Brito; Best Spanish Cuisine 2022, for the Gambrinus Las Palmas restaurant; and Best Canarian Reflection Cuisine 2022, for Tabaiba.

As far as the island of Tenerife is concerned, the awards for Best Hotel Restaurant 2022 went to San Hô, at the Royal Hideaway Corales Beach Hotel; Best Foreign Cuisine 2022, to the Kensei restaurant; and Best Room Service 2022, to Los Limoneros.

Finally, the award for Best Catering Project 2022 went to Long Beach (Lanzarote); Best Tasca/Gastrobar, to Casa Marcos (Fuerteventura); and the award for Best New Chef of the Canary Islands 2022 went to Mariana Hernández Medina, of the restaurant La Gatera (La Palma).

La Trastienda de Chago (Gáldar) has won the second edition of the ¡Qué Bueno! Gran Canaria Me Gusta Award for excellence in commitment to local produce, which recognises those restaurants that, beyond their style of cuisine, use produce from the island of Gran Canaria as the main ingredient in their dishes. Special recognition was also given to the Muxgo restaurant (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria).

Likewise, the twelve finalists for this distinction in 2023 received a plaque commemorating their link with the local product. They are: Amigo Camilo; Camino al Jamonal; Majuga y Sorondongo (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria); El Centro Guayadeque (Agüimes); El Sitio Ibérico (Santa Lucía de Tirajana); Grill La Pasadilla (Ingenio); La Catedral Bistró (Arucas); LíagoraCanaria (San Bartolomé de Tirajana); Los Guayres (Mogán); Perico Junior (Telde) and El Escondite (Valsequillo).
