- This 13th edition will feature the participation of 68 artisans from 16 municipalities in Gran Canaria, representing 24 crafts
Everything is set for the 13th edition of the Primavera Sur Crafts Fair to kick off this Friday, March 15th, in the surroundings of the Maspalomas Lighthouse, an ideal privileged setting to showcase and support the commercialization of artisan products. On this occasion, 68 artisans from 16 municipalities in Gran Canaria will come together, offering a sample of 24 artisan trades out of the 87 that make up the Repertoire of Artisan Trades of the Canary Islands.
Promoted and funded by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the Primavera Sur Handicraft Fair is backed by the Fund for Ethnography and the Development of Canarian Handicrafts (Fedac), an autonomous body attached to the Department of Economic Development, Industry, Trade and Handicrafts. It is organized by Infecar, the Gran Canaria Fair, in collaboration with the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council.
“68 artisans from the island of Gran Canaria, 16 municipalities, to be precise, and 24 trades will gather from March 15th to 24th in the surroundings of the Maspalomas Lighthouse to celebrate the Primavera Sur Handicraft Fair. A fair aimed at the tourism that gathers on the island of Gran Canaria during this season to showcase the products linked to our culture,” stated Minerva Alonso, Councillor for Economic Development, Industry, Trade and Handicrafts of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, who also extended an invitation to the “local citizens to take a stroll in the south and support our handicrafts, the handicrafts of Gran Canaria.”
Thus, The Primavera Sur Crafts Fair will take place from March 15th to 24th, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., featuring 68 artisans who will showcase their creations in ceramics, ceramics and modelling; leather goods, fabric decoration; jewellery; macramé; crochet; dressmaking; glassware; almazuelas; toy making; miniatures; recycling of materials; traditional carpentry; wax production; cabinet making; blacksmithing, forging and locksmithing; soap making; doll making; doll making and dressmaking; wood turning; paper and cardboard; cigars and printing and engraving.
Regarding their origin, the participants of this thirteenth edition arriving at the Maspalomas Lighthouse hail from 16 municipalities of Gran Canaria: 29 from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, nine from Agüimes, six from San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Telde, three from Santa Lucía de Tirajana, two from Ingenio, Santa Brígida, Santa María de Guía and Teror, and one from Agaete, Arucas, Firgas, Gáldar, Mogán, Moya, and Valsequillo.
**Dynamization Program**
In addition to the commercial offerings of the artisans present in this edition, the Gran Canaria Primavera Sur Handicraft Fair will feature an activity program for the two weekends the fair takes place.
On Friday, March 15th, starting at 11:30 a.m., there will be a musical performance by Abraham Ramos and Juan Sebastián Ramírez, with the temple as the protagonist; while on Sunday, March 17th, the fair will feature a carnival parade starting at 12:30 p.m.
For the following weekend, on Friday, March 22nd, at 12:30 p.m., there will be a musical performance by the Trío Con-Trastres; and on Saturday, March 23rd, a fashion show featuring textile products and accessories made in Gran Canaria, at 12:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Furthermore, the fair also has a live handicraft area, where the event participants will take centre stage, showcasing how they make their products.
