- The Canary Islands Electric Vehicle Show takes place this weekend at the Agüimes Exhibition Centre, bringing together companies, professionals and anyone interested in electric mobility
- In addition to talks and panel discussions, Movelec introduces this year, as a new feature, a series of practical efficient driving courses, combining informative sessions with hands-on driving experiences led by specialised instructors
The Canary Islands Electric Vehicle Show, Movelec, opened today its ninth edition at the Agüimes Exhibition Centre, “an event that continues to create opportunities for a sector that is increasingly attractive and in growing demand among the public,” said the President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, during the opening ceremony.
With 51% of all electric vehicles in the Canary Islands, “Gran Canaria currently leads the adoption of electric vehicles in the region, as well as the development of charging infrastructure across the island,” stated the President, who also announced that by the end of the year the island will have more than 100 charging points. “We are contributing to building a cleaner island, less dependent on external energy sources and fossil fuels, while creating new job opportunities in a sector that is becoming increasingly relevant.”
Over the course of these two days, companies, professionals and visitors interested in electric mobility will be able to explore the future of sustainable transport through around twenty companies showcasing fully electric vehicles and related services, alongside talks and panel discussions on key topics such as available incentives for purchasing electric vehicles, as well as activities designed to enhance the overall experience.
Cars, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles — all fully electric — share space with workshops and specialised service providers, including renewable energy installers, charging solution companies, associations and institutions.
Latest developments in the sector
Once again, Movelec dedicates a space to sharing the latest developments in the industry. Experts in electric mobility and efficient driving will deliver talks and take part in panel discussions, offering a comprehensive overview of the main pillars of electric mobility.
The first day began with an efficient driving workshop led by electric vehicle specialist Samuel Sánchez and Carlos Larrodé, Director of the Canary Islands School of Efficient Driving (ECCOEF), who shared key insights on how to optimise the use of electric vehicles.
Later, electric mobility expert and AEDIVE representative Ferran Menescal analysed the evolution of charging infrastructure in Spain, noting that “although it is not progressing as fast as we would like, it is moving at a steady pace,” thanks to the growing number of charging points and more efficient batteries. However, he pointed out that while “the current context is favourable, myths are being dispelled and prices are decreasing,” reaching 5.5 million electrified vehicles by 2030 remains “an overly ambitious target,” given that there are currently more than 850,000 on the road.
The programme then focused on the island context with a talk by Raúl García Brink, Councillor for Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge, who explained the progress of energy communities in Gran Canaria and their potential integration with electric mobility. “They can also be linked to charging points serving members of these communities,” he noted. “We are currently developing photovoltaic plants, but in a second phase we could connect charging infrastructure to support community members.”
Finally, Alexis Lozano, Island Director for Energy and Climate, presented a detailed overview of the island’s public charging infrastructure, which currently includes 60 charging points and is expected to reach 100 by the end of the year, with different charging speeds. He also announced that photovoltaic energy will soon be directly linked to charging points, allowing for variable pricing. “If there is surplus solar energy, prices will be reduced to encourage greater use, allowing users to charge at a lower cost,” he explained.
This afternoon, the programme will focus on the electrification of the taxi sector, both nationally and regionally, with a talk by Jorge Cristóbal Román, electric mobility content creator and taxi driver in Madrid, followed by a panel discussion including local taxi driver Paco Reyes and Albano Castillo, Director of Astara Icamotor.
The day will conclude with a debate on the current state of electric mobility in the Canary Islands, featuring Arturo Lang-Lenton (icanCharge), Roberto Amorín (Canary Charger) and Carmelo Santana (AUVE), who will discuss the alignment between public and private infrastructure and user adoption.
On Sunday, key topics such as efficient driving will continue, along with a focus on technological innovation through a talk by Álvaro Sauras — Vice President of AUVE, President of ASEPA’s Innovation Commission and Director of Autofácil — centred on flash charging as the next step in fast charging technology.
As part of the visitor experience, this year’s event also includes practical efficient driving courses led by specialised instructors, in addition to free-access driving simulators and test drives offered by participating brands.
Promoted by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and organised by Infecar, Feria de Gran Canaria, Movelec is sponsored by the Island Energy Council and supported by Cajasiete, the Municipality of Agüimes and the Association of Electric Vehicle Users (AUVE).
