• The event, now celebrating its 19th edition, brings together 60 artisans representing 19 different crafts from across the island, including two traditional trades.

The Gran Canaria Summer South Crafts Fair officially opened today in the surroundings of the Maspalomas Lighthouse, once again transforming this iconic southern landmark into a meeting point for creativity and the finest examples of traditional handmade craftsmanship.

Returning to its usual location for its 19th edition, the fair serves as “a platform to promote Gran Canaria’s artisan products and encourage sales among both local residents and the many visitors spending their holidays on the island,” said Minerva Alonso, Councillor for Economic Development, Industry, Commerce and Crafts. “The best way to appreciate the craftsmanship of Gran Canaria is simply to take a walk through the fair and support the 60 artisans who will be here throughout these days,” she added.

This year’s edition features artisans representing 19 different crafts, including two traditional trades: woodworking and cigar making. Among the contemporary crafts, ceramics and crochet have the largest representation, with seven artisans each, followed by jewellery with six. Macramé, leatherwork and recycled-material crafts are represented by five artisans each, while fashion and traditional toy making feature four participants each. The exhibition is completed by a wide range of other crafts, including textile decoration, stained glass, candle making, doll making, woodturning, miniatures, paper and cardboard crafts, soap making, and more.

One of this year’s highlights is the participation of four artisans making their debut at the fair, presenting creations in crochet, jewellery and recycled-material crafts.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the municipality with the largest representation, with 23 artisans, followed by Agüimes and Telde with six each. Four artisans come from San Bartolomé de Tirajana, while Santa Lucía and Ingenio are represented by three each. Valsequillo, Santa Brígida, Mogán, Arucas and Agaete each contribute two artisans, while Vega de San Mateo, Firgas, Teror, Santa María de Guía and Gáldar are represented by one artisan each.

To ensure a more comfortable experience during the summer season, the fair will open exclusively in the afternoon, from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. each day. Visitors will have the opportunity to browse the stalls, meet the artisans while they work, purchase handmade creations and, on selected evenings, enjoy live music performances from 8:00 p.m., adding to the atmosphere of the event.

Vocalist Ana García opens this year’s cultural programme today. She will be followed on Sunday, 9 August, by violinist Óscar Guerra. Saxophonist Juan Antonio Martín and vocal duo Zaida Y Keev will perform on Tuesday, 11 August, and Thursday, 13 August, with a repertoire spanning different musical styles and eras. The programme concludes on Saturday, 15 August, with Parranda Los Apañaos, performing a selection of traditional Canarian folk music.

The Gran Canaria Summer South Crafts Fair is promoted and funded by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria through the Foundation for Ethnography and the Development of Canarian Crafts (FEDAC), and organised by Infecar, Gran Canaria Trade Fair.
