Infecar will move part of its activity to the Agüimes Fairgrounds during the renovation works

  • The Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the Agüimes City Council signed an agreement to guarantee the promotion and encouragement of economic and social development on the island of Gran Canaria
  • The island’s president, Antonio Morales, highlights that the agreement aims to “turn the Agüimes venue into a space that can complement the fair activity of Gran Canaria in the southeast of the island”
  • The mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, emphasizes that his municipality offers “a multifunctional space, with an innovative, modern design, that allows for any type of event and fairs to be held”

Infecar, Feria de Gran Canaria, has already started the process of renewing and transforming the entire venue to make it a competitive, multifunctional, and sustainable space. Fair activities will have to move to other locations on the island next year and during the construction period.

For this reason, the Cabildo of Gran Canaria and the Agüimes City Council have reached a collaboration agreement to host part of Infecar’s activities at the Agüimes Fairgrounds, intending to maintain the promotion and encouragement of economic and social development on the island. The president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, and the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández, presented this agreement on Tuesday, July 23, at the venue in southeast Gran Canaria.

The president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, emphasized that the need for the agreement arises from the “modernization process that Infecar is going to undergo, one of the most important in its history,” just as the Feria de Gran Canaria is “heading towards its 60th anniversary.” He recalled that among other actions included in the Infecar Master Plan, and “with a regenerative urbanism strategy,” a “large pavilion as an exhibition space with an area of 7,500 square meters” will be built, which will also become “an iconic building in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and on the island.” He added that the renewal to be carried out at Infecar will make the venue “more sustainable,” with new waste management and access, and a renewal of its current pavilions and technical facilities.

The president of the island corporation alluded to the “great economic impact” that Infecar generates in Gran Canaria.” He explained that this fair activity will have to be moved “in 2025 and during the duration of the construction” to other locations. “This is the reason that brings us here,” Morales indicated. That is, the signing of the agreement designed for the Agüimes fairgrounds, “an iconic space,” to develop part of the fair activity that has been held annually at Infecar.” Thus, he pointed out that Agüimes has “everything necessary” to assume this agenda, with a total space of 10,000 square meters for these purposes.

With the agreement with the City Council, Morales observed, the aim is “not only to allow the realization of an important part of Infecar’s activity, mainly popular fairs, but also to turn the Agüimes venue into a space that can complement the fair activity of Gran Canaria in the southeast of the island.” In this regard, he thanked the municipal collaboration for achieving a “highly positive result for Infecar, for the southeast, and for Gran Canaria.”

On the other hand, Óscar Hernández, mayor of Agüimes, recalled that “from the beginning, when we proposed this facility, we aimed to have an additional resource for the island of Gran Canaria, not just for the municipality. That was the main objective: to bring life to these facilities, regardless of the administration they belong to.” Hernández pointed out that “there are people who, when events are organized in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, do not usually travel there. Also for this reason, it is fundamental for us to activate this space.”

The mayor indicated that the Agüimes fairgrounds “is a multifunctional space, with an innovative, modern design, that allows for any type of event and fairs.” In this vein, he added that “we have already held primary sector fairs, zero kilometre fairs, children’s fairs, and musical events.”
Hernández emphasized that “the venue serves multiple functions, has services such as parking and access, with easy connection to the rest of the island, via the GC-1. These requirements undoubtedly benefit the willingness of any administration to hold events here.”
Finally, the mayor of the southeastern municipality of Gran Canaria particularly wanted to “thank the Cabildo of Gran Canaria for this opportunity. Also Antonio Morales, who when he was mayor here designed this work proposal. And to all the Infecar staff, and its director, Natalia Santana.” He stressed that the transfer of part of the fair activity to Agüimes “is important for generating economy and employment, and for showcasing everything we do in the municipality.”

Infecar, Feria de Gran Canaria

With the holding of a dozen fair events a year that generate a significant economic impact on the island of Gran Canaria, especially noticeable in its capital, Infecar constitutes a reference point in the mid-Atlantic for the celebration of economic activity and promotion meetings for the service of companies, institutions, and public organizations, both locally and nationally and internationally.

The upcoming execution of its renovation works will represent a qualitative leap in updating its facilities in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, providing the necessary scenario for the future growth of a venue and an institution with already consolidated activity.

The Agüimes Fairgrounds

For its part, the Agüimes Fairgrounds is currently fully equipped to carry out activities such as concerts, fairs, and all kinds of commercial, social, and cultural events. The interior space, almost 4,000 square meters, is completely open and versatile, suitable for hosting calls and activities of different types.

The venue is strategically located at the Arinaga Crossroads, very close to the GC-1 highway and the Industrial Zone. It has large parking areas and is surrounded by gardens and green areas, right next to the Urban Park of the Arinaga Crossroads. It also stands out for the use of sustainable technical and architectural solutions, which minimize maintenance tasks and reduce energy consumption, thus contributing to the environment.

Its architectural characteristics, its particular elliptical shape, the quality of the materials used, and its spectacular translucent roof eleven meters high make it a unique building within the urban fabric of the municipality of Agüimes.
