The 14th edition of the International Sea Fair, to be held on 6, 7 and 8 June at the Sanapú Dock in the Port of Las Palmas, was presented on Tuesday morning, 27 May, under the theme “Sustainability of the Canary Coastal Zone.”

Fimar 2025 once again positions itself as the leading regional event for professionals in the nautical and marine-maritime sectors, and as a platform that promotes ocean culture and the blue economy.

Fimar 2025 is organised by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and the Port Authority of Las Palmas, with production led by the City of the Sea Department of the capital and Infecar Feria de Gran Canaria.

More than 50 exhibitors have already registered for this new edition, which will feature around 80 stands, a wide programme of informative talks, public activities, a children’s zone, and a food area. Fimar has become the key event for the blue economy in the city, on the island, and throughout the Canary Islands.

The Portuguese coastal town of Ericeira will be the guest city at Fimar 2025, which will once again include maritime excursions, a parade, and a performance by the Gran Canarian band Los Lola.

Minerva Alonso, Minister of Economic Development, Industry, Trade and Crafts of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, stated: “Fimar is a fair that represents us on the island of Gran Canaria, and one in which the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Port Authority, Infecar, and the Cabildo itself work together in close cooperation.”

She also highlighted that “this is a fair for everyone — from the most professional sectors of research and outreach within the blue economy, to the nautical industry and fashion. There are activities for children, for the general public, and an important message focused on sustainability and the care of the blue ecosystem. After all, we are islanders, and we must take care of our sea and our environment.”

Pedro Quevedo, Councillor for City of the Sea, stressed that “Fimar is a perfect example of public-private collaboration on the island. It’s a fair that generates not only economic value for companies offering products and services, but also a highly relevant intangible value: the promotion of ocean culture, fostering dialogue between the city and the sea, and recognising the economic potential of our coastline. This space is both fragile and valuable. FIMAR helps us promote ourselves, but also to recognise who we are as an island and as a sea-connected city.”

The Councillor also noted that “after 14 years, Fimar has become part of the city’s annual agenda, just before the summer begins. We invite all citizens to enjoy a full programme of activities including leisure, sports, demonstrations and workshops, gastronomy, and fascinating talks where we can catch up on the marine research being carried out in the Canary Islands.”

For her part, Beatriz Calzada, President of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, stated: “There is no better venue for this International Sea Fair than the Port of Las Palmas, a unique setting that brings together values like the blue economy and showcases the companies connected to the port sector. All of them form part of the economic engine of the city, the island, and the Canary Islands  just as the Port of Las Palmas itself does.”

Calzada also emphasised that this year, the Port Authority of Las Palmas is once again offering free boat tours for the public to explore the port.“These tours were undoubtedly one of the main attractions of the previous edition, and this year we have expanded the schedule and increased the number of departures,” she explained.

On Saturday, 7 June, free boat trips will be available at 11:00 am, 12:30 pm, 2:00 pm, 3:30 pm, 5:00 pm, and 6:30 pm. On Sunday, 8 June, trips will be available at 10:30 am, 12:00 pm, and 1:30 pm.

All tours will depart from Muelle Wilson. Those interested in joining can obtain their free tickets through the link on the Fimar website or board on a first-come, first-served basis.

Objectives of the Fair

Fimar aims to provide the sector with a specialised event to connect supply and demand, promote business opportunities, and foster networking. Its key goals are to boost the blue economy in the Canary Islands and to raise awareness and promote knowledge about marine science and sustainability, while celebrating our maritime traditions and ocean culture.

Fimar brings together stakeholders from across the sector: nautical activities, marine leisure and sports, training, marine science and research, public institutions and organisations involved in marine-related activities, industry suppliers, and even the nautical fashion sector.

Informative Sessions

This new edition of the fair will launch under the theme “Sustainability of the Canary Coastal Zone.” Based on this, a programme of open-access talks has been prepared, covering a range of current topics related to the oceans, with a special focus on the Canary Islands.

Subjects to be addressed in the talks include: the connection between physics and biology in ocean dynamics; drifting colonies of the Portuguese man o’ war; the role of organic ligands in the marine ecosystem around El Hierro; an unexpected link between island-grown dates and sea bass; and the journey of microplastics through the oceanic eddies surrounding the Canary Islands.

Several sessions will also take on a much-needed educational tone, offering guidelines to help educators and citizens address climate change or outlining ways to protect consumers from the effects of ciguatoxins that may accumulate in fish and shellfish.

Visitors will also learn about the real impact of tourism on the statistics that track marine litter in the Canary Islands—another key issue in today’s environmental context.

Furthermore, the open sessions at Fimar will highlight key advances in the current wave of technological development, including the exploration of ocean dynamics using autonomous robots, the forecasting of marine environment evolution through artificial intelligence, and the scalable production of sustainable fuels from microalgae.

Pedro Quevedo also announced that, as a prelude to the fair, Ciudad de Mar will host a seminar on marine protected areas and coastal management. Success stories will be shared, including that of Ericeira, FIMAR’s guest city, the MPA initiative to enhance marine area protection in the Mid-Atlantic, and the AMPLIA project on marine biosphere reserves. The seminar will take place on Thursday, 5 June, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Marine-Maritime Innovation Centre.

A Programme for All Audiences

In addition to its institutional and commercial offerings, FIMAR will present a wide range of free public activities this June. These include guided dockside visits to Navy Maritime Action Ships and Maritime Rescue vessels, children’s areas, boat rides, exhibitions on the harbour’s water surface, and a food zone.

All this will take place in an environment designed for leisure and public enjoyment, reaffirming Las Palmas’ connection with the sea and its maritime heritage. Special focus will be placed on the programme aimed at younger audiences.

Children’s performances, workshops, storytelling sessions, and sing-alongs will have a prominent role in this edition, which will feature an increasingly popular children’s area,  a highlight that grows in relevance with each edition, responding to public demand.

A Showcase for the Blue Economy in the Canary Islands

Institutions, public and academic bodies, sports clubs, civic organisations, and companies from sectors such as nautical services and suppliers, leisure and water sports, the marine and maritime sector, the port environment, and nautical fashion will once again be the main protagonists of Fimar 2025. That’s why the event continues to serve as a major forum for strengthening commercial relationships, generating business, and fostering communication between the public and private sectors.

Once again this year, the sector comes together for this annual event to present the progress of its activities related to the ocean environment, support ongoing initiatives, showcase the latest research and innovations, and introduce the business models and products developed by the companies in attendance.

The International Sea Fair is considered an essential forum for a branch of the economy that is seen as strategic for the present and future of the Canary Islands. Additionally, the fair will place special emphasis on the concept of sustainable marine leisure, promoting economic and social development along beaches and coastlines while ensuring environmental conservation and the protection of biodiversity.

Ericeira: Guest City

The International Sea Fair will once again feature a guest city. In 2025, that city is Ericeira: a coastal town located 35 kilometres from Lisbon, designated as a World Surfing Reserve by the non-governmental organisation Save the Waves Coalition. Like Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Ericeira is part of the World Surf Cities Network (CiGes)

Organisation and Collaborating Entities

Fimar is promoted by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and the Port Authority of Las Palmas, and is organised by the City of the Sea Department and INFECAR – Feria de Gran Canaria.
