DigiON Canarias consolidates itself as the core of digitalization in the islands

  • The second edition closes with successful business participation and as a meeting point for sector professionals.
  • Visitors have access to the most advanced digital solutions and technological tools.

How to protect ourselves against cyberattacks, how digital humans function, what challenges and responses are emerging from the Canary Islands regarding data hijacking, or where generative artificial intelligence is heading have been some of the topics discussed on the final day of DigiON Canarias, the Business Digitalization Salon of the Canary Islands, which concluded its second edition on Thursday, February 22nd.

With successful participation and 43 stands, this salon has become the epicentre of digitalization in the archipelago and a meeting point for industry professionals over the past two days.

Minerva Alonso, Councilor for Economic Development, Industry, Commerce, and Handicrafts of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, pointed out that “DigiON Canarias is consolidating itself as the professional digitalization salon of the Canary Islands, not only by surpassing last year’s number of exhibiting companies by almost 6% but also by increasing the number of visitors.” “It has become a forum, a space for meeting and exchanging experiences in digital transformation but also for experts in this field,” she concluded.

This professional gathering, promoted and financed by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and organized by Infecar, has consolidated in this second edition as the reference space on the islands for promoting and impulsing business digitalization. In this regard, visitors have had access to digital solutions and the most modern technological tools on the market through the more than 40 exhibitors who attended this event.

Digital humans and generative artificial intelligence

The highlight of the morning at DigiON Canarias was the presentation by hacker and Chief Digital Officer of Telefónica, Chema Alonso, mypublicinbox.com/ChemaAlonso, which drew a whole house. Alonso delved into digital humans driven by artificial intelligence, representing the pinnacle of personalization in the digital era. In this sense, these virtual entities, “precision-designed,” can understand and anticipate individual user needs, offering personalized experiences beyond simple automatic recommendations.

“Mass data collection, user privacy, and technical complexity are just some of the obstacles that must be overcome to implement these personalization strategies,” he pointed out.

In addition, Alonso also dedicated his presentation to highlighting the “errors” made by artificial intelligence because “although it has surpassed human quality, we must remember that AI is not perfect.” “This is what is known as hallucinations of artificial intelligence. The information generated by the system that, although written coherently, contains some incorrect or downright erroneous data,” he said.

Dissemination and analysis

DigiON Canarias featured an extensive program of presentations that discussed the digital transformation that small and medium-sized enterprises are undergoing and where artificial intelligence and cybersecurity are heading.

Thus, on the final day of DigiON Canarias, a roundtable discussion was held on the ‘Challenges and responses in the Canary Islands: ransomware in the digital environment,’ moderated by Paqui Quintana, director of the School of Computer Engineering at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and featuring the participation of David Delgado, from Edataconsulting; Manuel Domínguez, Black9; and Oswaldo Brito, from Protection.

Regarding cybersecurity, the Business Digitalization Salon of the Canary Islands featured interventions by Ofelia Tejerina, president of the Internet Users Association and expert lawyer in Cybersecurity and New Technologies, who addressed a talk on ‘AI for cybersecurity: privacy and best practices.’
