The tender for the project of the new Infecar pavilion is awarded to the IDOM + Haddad + Landeira joint venture.

  • The objective of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria is to provide Infecar with an infrastructure that will become an international benchmark.

The Canary Islands Trade Fair Institution (Infecar) has formalised the contract for the elaboration of the building project and project management of a new pavilion and a building for complementary uses to the joint venture IDOM + Haddad + Landeira, for a total amount of one million one hundred and five thousand euros (1,105,000.00 €).

The joint venture awarded the contract is made up of the company IDOM and the Gran Canarian architects Javier Haddad and Juan Ramón Landeira. IDOM’s experience in the trade fair and congress sector is reflected in some of its main projects, such as the Bilbao Exhibition Center (BEC), the extension of the Fira de Barcelona, the Lima Convention Centre (LCC) and the new Dwarka Fair (New Delhi – India).

Javier Haddad and Juan Ramón Landeira run the Onda Arquitectura studio, with extensive experience in national and international projects. Thus, this joint venture won its proposal over the other five bidders who participated in this process.

Now, once the contract has been formalised, Phase I of the drafting of technical projects will begin, which includes the work from the awarding of the service until the demolition, building and activity licences are obtained, prior to the start of the works, which will be carried out in Phase II.

Once this initiative materialises, the current offer of the Canary Islands Trade Fair Institution, consisting of trade fair pavilions, a conference centre with multi-purpose halls, two parking areas and landscaped areas, will be joined by a main pavilion of approximately 8,500 square metres, configured as a single open-plan space; and a building for complementary uses, with 8 floors above ground level and one below ground level, which will have an outdoor and indoor public space, entrance hall, toilets, offices, catering space and facilities.

The aim of the Cabildo is to provide Infecar with an infrastructure that will become an international benchmark, thanks to its high architectural quality and multifunctional nature, which will allow the venue to grow its activity within the trade fair and congress sector at a national and international level.

With all this, the future of the venue will be reorganised around this new pavilion, which is planned as an infrastructure with a clear and emphatic volumetry in a single volume. The aim is to construct a building of architectural and sustainable quality, given its visibility, size and location, which will become an icon of the city and the island.

Sustainability

Although the objectives of this tender include the need to design a site that is committed to sustainable urban planning, being compatible with the Breeam Very Good sustainability certification, the awarded joint venture has raised this proposal to Breeam Exceptional certification, also implementing the necessary measures to make it carbon neutral, both during its construction phase and when it is operational.

This sustainability certification is part of the collaboration agreement reached between Infecar and Breeam Spain, with the aim of achieving sustainable building certification for buildings in use and new constructions on the site, thus becoming the first trade fair institution in Spain to reach an agreement of this type to work on its certification.
Thus, alternative construction materials to conventional ones or processes that reduce the amount of CO2 produced in both phases will be used; a highly efficient building will be created, due to its design and location, in order to minimise energy consumption, so that systems will be installed to generate renewable energy on site through the installation of photovoltaic panels.

In addition, a building management system will be installed to monitor and record consumption by means of meters, allowing the detection of anomalies, as well as corrections and improvements in usage patterns; the recovery of grey water and the installation of low water demand systems, both for sanitary use and irrigation, will be proposed; and a run-off water management plan will be implemented based on measures for the collection and retention of storm water on the plot, among other aspects.
