The Gran Canaria Summer South Craft Fair returns with a new edition, the seventeenth, to the Maspalomas Lighthouse. For ten days, from August 9 to 18, locals and tourists will be able to explore the largest showcase of handmade products on the island by the 64 artisans participating in this edition. The event will be accompanied by concerts and daily demonstrations of some craft works on the island.

The Fair, promoted and financed by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria through the Fund for Ethnography and Development of Canarian Crafts (Fedac) and organized by Infecar, will open its doors on Friday, August 9, from 5:00 p.m. On this occasion, artisans representing up to 17 municipalities of Gran Canaria will be able to give visibility to and market their products in the summer showcase offered by the gardens surrounding the Maspalomas Lighthouse.

Regarding the origin of the artisans, the municipality with the most significant representation at this Fair will be the island’s capital, with twenty artisans. Nine artisans will participate from the city of Agüimes and six from Telde and San Bartolomé de Tirajana; three from Valsequillo and Firgas; two from Teror, Santa María de Guía, Santa Lucía de Tirajana and Santa Brígida; and one from Agaete, Arucas, Gáldar, Mogán and Moya. These 64 artisans will represent 21 of the 87 crafts that make up the Repertoire of Artisan Crafts of the Canary Islands, so visitors to the Fair will be able to find products and creations made of ceramics, wax, leather, ironwork, glassware and jewellery; also toys, miniatures, traditional carpentry, doll making, cigar making, fabric decoration, crochet and macramé textiles, patchwork, and works created from paper, cardboard and recycled materials.

This will be followed by demonstrations of weaving by Ana Rosa Vega Godoy, stonework with Gustavo Manuel Santana Santana, Palm basketry with Alba Cruz Gutiérrez, wool spinning with Bárbara Suárez Herrera; knife making with Manuel Suárez Perera; leather work and shoemaking with José Manuel Rodríguez Díaz; embroidery with Josefa Peña Galván and rye basketry with María Eloísa Peña Galván. The final touch to the exhibitions will be provided by the manual dexterity of the lace maker from Ingenio, Nicolasa Alemán Sosa. In addition, the Parranda La Polvajera and Parranda Araguaney will be in charge of livening up the evenings of Friday, August 9 and Thursday, August 15, starting at 6:30 p.m.m.
