To highlight the value of local produce and bring the culture and knowledge of the primary sector closer through sensory experiences. These are the objectives with which the Product Classroom and the Knowledge Classroom are returning to the ninth edition of the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair.

Learning and knowledge in order to value and love the produce of our land and everything rural and fishing as a vital space for development, but also, where culture and knowledge, territory and nature, are expressed in experiences of aromas, flavours, colours and textures are the great claims of these spaces for enjoyment that will once again be present at the Fair.

Promoted and financed by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and organised by Infecar, the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair, which takes place between 29 April and 1 May, is the leading event in Gran Canaria, and increasingly in the Canary Islands, both for the primary sector and for the gastronomy sector, highlighting the importance of the island’s local produce.

Product Classroom

This space is a commitment to a sustainable, endogenous model of rural, agricultural, livestock, fishing and industrial development, with a perspective of equality, which is brought closer to all those who visit the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair through its products.

These workshops combine technical tastings of the product with presentations of gastronomic tourism projects in the context of the product, aspects related to the product and its production and/or preparation. With all this, the programme for Friday 29 April includes six sessions dedicated to: Honey tastings; Gofio tastings, disseminating the history of the mills and their millers; Cheese tastings for children; Coffee tastings, conveying its history and how to harmonise it with other products and Cheese tastings.

On Saturday 30 April, the Aula del Producto will be offering tastings of yoghurt from Gran Canaria, micro-vegetables and sprouts for food and cooking; tastings of different varieties of wrinkled potatoes, salt, disseminating the salt-making tradition; tastings of goat’s cheeses paired with honey rum and of shepherds’ and transhumance cheeses.

Finally, Sunday 1 May will be dedicated to cheeses from the northwest of the island, in support of this small but great Protected Designation of Origin. Thus, the first session will be on ‘Flor, Media Flor y Guía’; the second will be on ‘Sidras y paisajes de la manzana en Valleseco’; the third on ‘Vinos DOP y Ruta del Vino de Gran Canaria’ and, lastly, ‘Rones Premium de Gran Canaria’.

Another great novelty of this new edition is the presence of the Gran Canaria Wine Route, recently accredited by the ACEVIN association, where attendees will be introduced to the project and wine tastings will be held at the wineries associated with the Route and the Regular Council of Gran Canaria Wines.

Knowledge Room

The second of the sensory areas of the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair is the Aula del Conocimiento, a space dedicated to innovation and the enhancement of the value of products and the development of complementary activities from the perspective of promoting local knowledge and products, innovation and creativity. The aim is to lay the necessary foundations to awaken rural concerns and passions.

Thus, on Friday 29 April there will be six sessions dedicated to the following: Honey tastings and a presentation on the Canarian black bee; Tomato tastings and workshops on the valorisation of wool, fruit and floral art, Premium cocktails with Gran Canarian fruit and Gran Canarian vodka’; as well as on the making of artisan beers and tastings of beers with local grains.

On Saturday 30 April, the programme includes workshops on the recognition and use of traditional medicinal plants, guidelines for making and eating quality bread, with tastings of sponge bread from the countryside of Gran Canaria, workshops on making the most of wool, sugar cane, rum and fruit from Gran Canaria, making vermouths with wines, botanicals and fruit, as well as workshops that will highlight the value of our wines and agricultural resources.

Finally, on Sunday 1st May, the Aula del Conocimiento will focus on workshops related to the preparation of olives from Gran Canaria in traditional dressings of green juices and other preparations with organic fruit and vegetables, the enhancement of old peppers by making traditional mojos, fruit cocktails without alcohol, in order to enhance the value of our fruits.

Those interested in taking part in the Aula del Conocimiento and the Aula del Producto can register directly at the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair, once they have entered the premises, and until the maximum capacity allowed for each workshop is reached.
It should also be noted that Mataderos Insulares de Gran Canaria will be holding an extensive programme of activities related to meat, in an exclusive space with its own classroom, thus facilitating the valuation of products from the island’s livestock.

The island’s small-scale fishing and aquaculture will be a prominent sector in the primary sector area, as the dynamic stand will be joined by live activities linked to the product and the fishermen, as well as, as a new feature this year, a space for the direct sale of fish from the six fishermen’s guilds and cooperatives.

A fourth hall will have a multi-purpose character where the different associations and groups will be able to give talks and workshops related to the primary sector and its products.
