The Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair highlights the value of the primary sector in its 12th edition

  • A programme full of activities will showcase the excellence of local products and the island’s gastronomic richness
  • Tastings, exhibitions, workshops and samplings will highlight the work behind farming, livestock, fishing, and artisanal production in Gran Canaria

The Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair, celebrating its 12th edition from 9 to 11 May at Infecar, will dedicate a prominent space to the island’s primary sector, with a wide-ranging programme of activities that reinforce local products’ identity, quality, and diversity.

Thanks to the collaboration of various associations, the fair becomes a platform for bringing the rural and fishing worlds—and their traditions—closer to the public. This year’s edition carries the slogan “Local product, unique identity”. Associations such as Aider Gran Canaria, Biocosecha, Aprocegal, Proquenor, Tierra Fértil, Almendra de Gran Canaria, Acecican, Asoquedran, Mercados Agrícolas, COAG Canarias and the Biocanarias Cooperative have prepared a diverse offering to highlight the quality of products grown and crafted on the island.

The Aula Vinos de Gran Canaria, supported by the Gran Canaria Wine Route and the Regulatory Council of the DOP Vinos de Gran Canaria, returns to lead and energise this space, reaffirming its commitment to the value of local wine and the dissemination of the island’s winemaking culture.

This year’s programme includes activities designed to deepen knowledge, appreciation and connection with the territory through wine: expert-led tastings, pairings with local products, informative sessions on Gran Canaria’s wine tourism, and presentations of unique initiatives like Proyecto Maridaje. This latter initiative is a collaboration between the Wine Route and musicians Germán López (timple) and Augusto Báez (piano), offering an immersive experience that links music, identity and the island’s wine-growing landscapes. The experience will soon be available in various venues along the Route.

This new edition of the Fair is committed to offering high-quality, accessible, and engaging content. It will focus on varietal diversity, oenological innovation, sustainability, and the relationship between wine, art, and gastronomy.

Another prominent feature this year will be the area dedicated to Gran Canaria meats, led by Mataderos Insulares de Gran Canaria. This space will host butchery demonstrations, product presentations and live cooking shows combining tradition and innovation. With a focus on lamb, sheep, kid, goat, pork, rabbit and beef, these activities offer an opportunity to spotlight the quality of local livestock and the professionals behind it.

The programme also includes a special area called the Primary Sector Classroom, dedicated to the island’s most authentic flavours. Honey, potatoes, coffee, cheese, cider, rum, sugar cane and tropical fruits will all be part of tastings designed to showcase their characteristics and bring their flavours closer to the public. These sessions will be led by recognised experts, with occasional collaboration from La Aldea and Telde municipalities.

Organised by the Primary Sector Department of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the space will host themed tastings for up to 30 people. As a new feature of the 12th edition, guided tastings for around 70 people will also be held. These will feature a dynamic dialogue between specialists and a guest chef who will present a four-dish menu designed to highlight the uniqueness of local ingredients.

The fair will also again include the More Than Just Fishing Classroom, a space designed to promote the value of artisanal fishing and the richness of Gran Canaria’s marine products. Games, activities, and direct sales of fresh fish—led by the Melenara Fishermen’s Cooperative—round out this sea-inspired experience.

The primary sector’s participation in Gran Canaria Me Gusta will culminate in the awards ceremony for the 19th Official Gran Canaria Honey Contest 2024, on Friday, 9 May at 6:00 p.m., in recognition of the island’s beekeepers and the quality of their production.

Throughout the three days of the fair, special attention will also be given to children. They can participate in hands-on workshops related to the primary sector throughout the day. They’ll also enjoy several performances from Cancionero Isleño, an innovative educational project focused on Canarian culture.

Thus, the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair reaffirms its commitment to the primary sector as both an economic driver and a cornerstone of the island’s cultural identity, establishing itself as a meeting point for producers, professionals, consumers, and families who believe in local products and sustainability.

The Cabildo de Gran Canaria promoted and funded the event, which Infecar, Feria de Gran Canaria, organised. Cajasiete is an official partner and supports it. Gran Canaria Me Gusta and the Gran Canaria Chamber of Commerce collaborate. The 12th edition is sponsored by SPAR Gran Canaria and HiperDino, with Comercial Naranjo as equipment sponsor.
